Dance

KEY STAGE 3

All students study one/two block(s) of Dance per year within the PE curriculum. Students choreograph, perform and analyse their own and others work based on various professional works, stage shows and styles of dance. All students are assessed at the end of each block.

In addition, lunchtime and afterschool clubs are available for all students who wish to attend, with annual productions and performances showcasing the work produced.

Performance Units

*Students learn 2 set study pieces from previous years to trial for a practical assessment

*Students take part in and lead own warm up material which develops key technical skills and is taught to other members of the class. They also take part in technique lessons to further develop performance skills

*Students take part in the Annual Dance/Musical production-this may take the form of solo and/or group pieces

Choreography Units

*Students study theoretical knowledge of choreography and then apply this in a range of tasks- Movement components duet/large group tasks based on a given stimulus and final assessment on duet/trio pieces based on a stimulus of choice linked to GCSE criteria

Theory Units

*Students have 1 theory lesson per fortnight and study the following topics-movement components/physical and expressive skills/

Hypothetical and real choreography/areas of the stage/health and fitness/dance for camera/types of staging/different genres of dance and their features/spelling of key words/exam style questions/regular testing of key areas and a final exam on all areas

Performance Units

*Students learn 2 solo dance phrases for the final exam in year 11. They also begin to learn short phrases from the other 2 set studies in preparation for the group performance in year 11

*Students take part in and lead own warm up material which develops key technical skills and is taught to other members of the class. They also take part in technique lessons to further develop performance skills

*Students take part in the Annual Dance/Musical production-this may take the form of solo and/or group pieces

Choreography Units

*Students study theoretical knowledge of choreography and then apply this in a range of tasks- solo/duet/large group tasks based on a stimulus of choice and then a final assessment- duet/trio pieces based on a given stimulus taken from a sample paper from the new GCSE specification

Theory Units

*Students have 2 theory lesson per fortnight and study the following topics-recap of areas studied at year 9 with particular focus on physical and expressive skills/hypothetical and real choreography/stimuli/structure. Students then begin to study the 6 professional works. Spelling of key words/exam style questions(with focus on bigger mark questions)/regular testing of key areas continues and mock papers

Performance Units

*Students rehearse the 2 solo dance phrases for the final exam-focus is placed on individual performance skills- mock graded in response to criteria. They continue to learn short phrases from the other 2 set studies and develop these for the group performance piece (a combination of taught and self-created work)- mock graded in response to criteria

*Students continue to take part in and lead own warm up material and take part in technique lessons to further develop performance skills

*Students may take part in the Annual Dance/Musical production-this may take the form of solo and/or group pieces

Choreography Units

*Students continue to study theoretical knowledge of choreography and apply this in a range of short recap tasks. Workshop ideas as a group based on questions from the paper and then students prepare solo/duet/group tasks based on a given stimulus for the final assessment- mock exam in 1st term

Theory Units

*Students have 2/3 theory lesson per fortnight-recap of areas studied at year 9/10 with particular focus on physical and expressive skills/hypothetical and real choreography and the 6 professional works. Spelling of key words/exam style questions(with focus on bigger mark questions)/regular testing of key areas and mock papers in timed conditions

Students can opt to take GCSE Dance in years 9, 10 and 11. This involves 3 lessons per week.

Throughout the course students perform set pieces, choreograph their own work and develop an appreciation and analysis of professional works and key choreographers.

KEY STAGE 5

Students can opt to take AS and A Level Dance in years 12 and 13. This involves 5 lessons per week.

Throughout the course students develop their technical skills, further advanced set pieces, choreograph their own work and create dance pieces for others. They also develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of key works and choreographers.
