Humanities

The Humanities Faculty includes History, Geography, Religious Studies and Travel & Tourism (in Year 9, KS4 & Post-16).  All students follow courses in these subjects in Years 7-9 (KS3).  At the end of KS3 students are given option choices, though large numbers continue to follow GCSE (KS4) courses in one, or more, of the Humanities subjects.

In Years 7, 8 & 9, all students receive two 50-minute lessons each of History and Geography.  In Year 7 there is a single 50-minute lesson of Religious Studies each week and two 50-minute lessons in Years 8 & 9.  The students are taught in mixed ability classes and the Faculty is dedicated to developing resources to cater for the varying ability levels.  This policy continues in the Upper School with all GCSE classes taking common courses and examination papers where differentiation is achieved by outcome.  The one exception is in Geography where tiered papers are set.

The Faculty has a strong tradition of academic success and of innovative curriculum development and teaching methods.  Many of our successful students’ progress to Years 12 and 13 and large numbers are at present studying History, Geography and Religious Studies at AS and A2 Level with many students progressing to further education.  Travel & Tourism is also offered at KS4, and is a particularly popular and successful addition to the curriculum.

Students studying Humanities are monitored through regular testing and the production of assessed assignments.  At the end of the Key Stage 3, students are awarded a Level score which reflects their progress through the stage.

The Faculty is housed in the main part of the school in a suite of classrooms which have good access to Smart Boards, whiteboards, OHP and audio equipment.  The faculty works closely as a team, supporting each other and sharing ideas and initiatives.  Over the years a great variety of resource materials have been developed which form the basis for the delivery of the curriculum.

As part of our Humanities Specialism Status, we have recently developed links with our local primary schools, with some of our students visiting them and teaching younger students.  These schools have also visited Chislehurst Schools’ Humanities Faculty, with their students taking part in activities.
